Though it’s not Czechia’s biggest city, Ostrava is home to a number of world-class events. If you’re into the live music scene, Colours of Ostrava and Beats for Love are huge festivals that bring in people from all over Europe. Visit in December for the Christmas festival, or enjoy the Shakespeare festival held in summer. Whatever the time of year, synchronise your travel dates with these six unmissable events.

Souznění 2020
It’s basically impossible to travel to Europe in December without seeing a Christmas market — where wooden stalls serve mulled wine and warm food, and souvenirs or other trinkets are basically a seasonal rite of passage. Thing is, Ostrava’s Souznění takes it up a level and is an entire advent festival. As well as the iconic markets, the program includes events like film screenings, exhibits, and live music around the city. Performances of traditional and modern music are held inside churches and historical venues, and carolers perform in the city square. The celebration ends on a Sunday with a big gala concert and amazing performances. The festival takes place each December.
Shakespeare Festival 2020
Every summer, the Shakespeare Festival comes to Ostrava. Seeing a Shakespeare play in real life is a special experience to begin with, but Ostrava’s event really over delivers. Ticket-holders are treated to performances in a spectacular 13th century castle — a fitting, historic setting for Shakespeare’s acts, if a little before his time! The outdoor stage and al fresco experience is the best way to spend a balmy summer evening. A word of warning, though: some of the plays are performed in Czech, and others in English, so make sure to double check before you book.

Festival on the Streets 2020
This yearly event has become a local favourite every summer. Festival on the Streets has a huge and varied programme, with music, dance, workshops, stalls, art, games, and theatre. Throughout the festival, Ostrava’s streets are shut down and turned into makeshift stages, and iconic historic attractions are transformed into performance spaces. As you can imagine, it’s a pretty memorable experience to watch live music while sitting inside the 700-year-old Silesian castle! This summer celebration is a chance for Ostravans to let their hair down, and it feels like the whole city is taking part.

Beats For Love 2020
The biggest dance festival in Central Europe, Beats For Love is always a wild time. The programme has a heavy sway towards electronic music, with big name artists, like Lost Frequencies and Robin Schulz, often filling the top slots. If you get a ticket, you can expect four days of non-stop partying, making Beats For Love a bucket-list festival for dance music enthusiasts. The location is nothing short of extraordinary either, with thirteen stages set up in the old mining area of Dolní Vítkovice, among the old industrial structures. For the real festival experience, make sure you camp next to the festival site... though chances are you won’t be sleeping much.

Colours Of Ostrava 2020
Colours of Ostrava is a music festival like no other, held over three days at Dolní Vítkovice — the city’s old metalworks and mining site. As well as musical acts, there are discussions, theatre acts, film screenings, and workshops. As a result, it’s one of the most unique festivals out there. After all, where else can you drink wine in an old bunker and watch a performance in a defunct gasometer? The Colours of Ostrava line-up usually draws massive international acts, and past lineups have included Florence + The Machine, The Cure, and Tame Impala.

Třebovice Kolache 2020
This folk festival is held over a weekend every September to celebrate the beginning of the autumn season. Held in a park just outside the city centre, it’s a three day event that draws visitors from all over the region. The main draw is the music and dance lineup, with performances from every genre from traditional folk to bluegrass. Stalls set up in the park also serve traditional food for when you get hungry, and handcrafts you can browse. Třebovice Kolache is usually held on the third weekend of September, so if folk music is your thing, keep an eye out!
