Ostrava’s attractions are about as varied as you can get. Visitors can explore the city’s industrial past with a trip through a historical mine at Landek Park, or go back even further and pay a visit to a 700-year-old castle with beautiful grounds. For something truly out of the ordinary, get out of the city and climb a faux volcano, or take a chairlift up to Pustevny and be rewarded with seriously good views. Landek Park and Mining Museum
Ostrava was originally a coal mining town and Landek Park and Mining Museum is one of the best places to witness the mining infrastructure still in place today. A visit to Landek may include a tour of an old mine preserved since the 1800s, or a walk through the dark and eerie tunnels which miners used to walk to work. As Ostrava’s mining history is so recent, Landek’s tours are still led by retired miners who used to work at the park, making this a fascinating trip back in time. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm.
Dolní Vítkovice
Another attraction linked to Ostrava’s industrial history, this former steelworks site is now open to the public as a free outdoor museum. Dolní Vítkovice is a beautiful maze of rusted towers and structures which you can wander to your heart’s content. Ride the elevator up to the 60-metre high observation deck, or take a tour to walk through the old blast furnace — there are even events and concerts held inside the gasometer! Open daily 10am to 6pm.
Ema Heap
A man-made pile of waste rock doesn’t sound like a super-appealing tourist attraction, but Ema Heap is actually well worth a visit. From town it looks like a mountain, and there’s a trail you can follow to hike to the top, but this hill is actually a collection of mining debris that was dumped over the course of 40 years. Locals call it a volcano, because the surface stays warm all year thanks to the chemical reactions going on under the surface. Look closely, and you can sometimes see steam coming out. But don’t worry, it’s totally safe!
Radegast Brewery
Tourists flock to Czechia every year with the hope of tasting some very good beer, and this is the place in Ostrava to do it. Radegast beer is some of the best in the country, so why not order it right from the source? You can do a tour of the brewery, and taste the varieties they have on offer. It’s about a 20 minute drive from Ostrava, but definitely one of the best things you’ll do on your trip. Open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 5pm, and Sunday 10am to 2pm from April to September.
Silesian Castle
Just outside the city centre of Ostrava you’ll find this white-walled and red-roofed castle that dates all the way back to the 13th century. The exteriors are impressive enough, but once you get inside it’s pretty fascinating too. Kids and adults alike will enjoy exploring the castle’s exhibits, including a small showcase of medivial torture devices. Whilst you look around, be sure to peek inside every room — there are a couple of hidden gems you might easily miss! Open Monday to Saturday 10am to 6pm, though hours change throughout the year so be sure to check the website.
Pustevny Ski Area
While Pustevny is best known as a ski area, this mountainous region can definitely be enjoyed all year round. During winter, the slopes are covered with fresh powder and are a great place to crack out the skis or snowboards. In summer, you can take the chairlift up to the top of the mountain to get great panoramic views. From here you can hike, or explore the charming, mountain architecture of Pustevny town. Chairlift is open daily 8am to 5pm.
