No matter where you are in Ostrava, you’ll see the Bolt Tower looming over the city. The tall structure was once part of the old mining complex but is now open to the public as a museum and cafe. A visit up to Bolt Tower will leave you in awe of the huge floor-to-ceiling windows, with amazing views over the industrial area below and out to the city. PetPunk is undoubtedly the trendiest cafe in town and, as expected, the baristas take their coffee very seriously indeed. The menu offers a range of specialities including batch brew and unique blends — both of which can be hard to come by in other small European cities. But despite their love of all things bean, the PetPunk team are not coffee snobs at all! This is a super friendly place and the staff are always keen for a chat. Open weekdays 7am to 7pm. If you’re looking for a quick coffee on the go, Čerstvý Boby is a great option. This hole-in-the-wall joint is standing-room only but the quality of coffee is exceptional. The name literally means “fresh beans” in Czech, so you know you’re getting the good stuff. What’s more, the cafe doubles as a shop, selling beans and brewing equipment if you’re a budding home barista. If you ask, the staff will help you choose a blend that’s right for you. Open weekdays 6am to 7pm, and Saturday 8am to 3pm on. Closed Sunday.
Cafe Daniel is the sort of place you’d never stumble upon. Hidden behind an unassuming door, and up a flight of stairs, you’ll find a cosy cafe decked out like a 1930s apartment. The coffee is great, and they serve cocktails too if you’re there in the afternoon. Thanks to the super homely decor, a visit to Cafe Daniel feels just like hanging out at a friend’s — a very special, and welcome, feeling when you’re in a foreign country. Cat lovers, form an orderly queue. Yep, Cauky Mnauky is a cat cafe — or, more accurately, it’s a cafe with a lot of cats hanging around. Unlike other cat cafes in the world, there’s no entrance fee, just a big open cafe with an outdoor terrace and plenty of furry friends. Lean in to the theme and order a cat-inspired cocktails — meowjito anyone? To top it all off, the cappuccinos even have cat ears. Open daily 2pm to 7pm.
