Rooted in the culture and traditions of northern Bohemia, Liberec’s festival season is full of artistic events, cultural occasions, great parties and holiday celebrations. While day-to-day life in the city can be quite restrained, when it comes to a festival Liberec comes alive, and pulls out all the stops. Here are six of the best events in Liberec throughout the year.

Materinka Festival 2020
The Naive Theatre Company was founded in 1949, and was one of the first professional puppet theatres in former Czechoslovakia. Since the 1970s this wonderful troop has brought the streets of Liberec alive every two years with the Materinka, the festival of professional puppet theatres. An old and longstanding traditional art form, puppetry has been used in Bohemia to tell stories for centuries. Today, the Materinka brings children’s fantasies to life with a blend of magic, skill and craftsmanship, and is an amazing showcase of the fascinating and unusual cultural tradition. Puppet theatres from across the country demonstrate their art and their techniques, and compete for a grand prize at the end of the week.

Liberec Easter Market 2020
Easter in Liberec is accompanied by a traditional market and Easter celebrations, with stall after stall selling local delicacies and traditional arts and crafts, while a parade marks the start of the holiday season. You can see artisans and makers from the local region demonstrating their work, and fascinating, eclectic displays of the rich local traditions and celebrations. You can expect the usual eggs, rabbits and chickens, but you also might be surprised by traditional Easter whips! The highlight of the festival is the performance of local childrens’ choirs in the centre of the main square.

Fresh Festival 2020
A literal feast for the senses, Fresh Festival is a treat for all gourmets and gourmands — a presentation of the best in contemporary gastronomy, and more than anything else a celebration of great food and drink. The festival is a showcase of the best that the Czech culinary scene has to offer, with cooking shows and workshops by celebrity chefs, wine presentations and tastings, food stalls from some of the top restaurants in the country, beer tents, and an enormous farmers market. Visitors get the chance to taste some of the best cooking from around the country, and drink and dine to their hearts’ content!

Night of Churches 2020
The Night of the Churches is a relatively recent phenomenon, but has become a tradition across Central and Eastern Europe. One night a year, over 1,500 churches and chapels in the Czech Republic throw open their doors and invite everyone inside for free and with no commitment, to see often undiscovered religious art, and mingle with people from a range of denominations and faiths. Liberec’s Night of Churches offers up a feast of beautiful architecture and dazzling artworks, in 60 churches, including some which are almost never accessible to the general public. This is a wonderful and extremely moving event, and an opportunity not to be missed.

Létofest Travelling Music Festival 2020
A new player on the European music festival scene, Letofest has made a significant impression in a very short time. A touring summer rock and pop festival, Letofest brings the best in Czech and Slovak music to 8 cities across the Czech Republic, including Liberec. The festival includes a great mix of well-known and under the radar artists, a rich program of artistic events, competitions and small-scale sporting fixtures, as well as a full offering of events and activities for kids. The festival takes place in the private Liberec Aerodrome, with the grand, mountainous landscape of the region providing the perfect backdrop.

Liberec Christmas Markets 2020
Christmas markets in Central Europe tend to be grand, elaborate and extremely festive affairs, and the Czech Republic and Liberec are no exceptions. When December comes around, Liberec’s picture-perfect Old Town is overwhelmed with Christmas decorations, and a huge market dominates the main square in front of the Town Hall throughout the festive period. Expect quaint arts and crafts, festive performances, and loads of warming seasonal food and drink to get you in the Christmas spirit. Keep an eye out for the hand-painted glass decorations, which are traditional to northern Bohemia.
