Provence and Marseille are famous for their very specific landscapes: the Mediterranean wrapping around the ancient port or the sun-drenched, rocky terrain inland. The Festival de Marseille is a three-week long extravaganza of music, art, drama, performance and creativity, driven and inspired by the energy and vibrancy that defines the city of Marseille. Extraordinarily diverse and combining aspects and traditions from genres and cultures across the world, the Festival truly has something for every single person who attends. Whether you are a fan of classical theatre, alternative modern dance or Canadian rap n’ roll (!), this is a truly international, genre-busting celebration. The festival transforms the city, as tens of thousands of visitors descend to sample some of the dynamism and vibrancy on show.
Running since 1998, Marsatac has grown from humble beginnings to become a true Marseille institution. A magnificent feast of global rap and electronic music stars descend on the city for a memorable weekend of serious tunes and a high-octane party. Originally dedicated to the Marseille hip hop scene, it has grown into a far larger affair, but still has deep and important connections to its roots. One night of the festival is dedicated to African music, and features some of the most interesting and exciting artists from across the continent, as well as home-grown in Marseille. More than 35,000 music fans flock to Parque Chanot and Plage du Petit Roucas over the course of three days, and music lovers of all stripes would be well advised to join them.
