Romantic Retreat: A Couple’s Guide To Strasbourg
Whether you’re visiting Strasbourg amidst the sparkling lights of its Christmas market or surrounded by the colourful blossoms of spring, there’s no shortage of romantic trips and gestures to be had on these French city streets.
For loved up couples in search of their next European getaway, look no further than the fairy tale city of Strasbourg.
Located close to the German border, the city is the capital of France’s historic Alsace region; famed for its fine wines, rich food and medieval heritage.

Over the centuries, Strasbourg has passed intermittently between French and German rule, creating a unique cultural blend seen not only in the city’s juxtaposed architecture – where French-style chateaux sit alongside half-timbered houses – but also in its international, multi-lingual residents.
Although famed for its heaving Christmas market, the city’s quaint riverside setting, myriad historical sites and rustic restaurants are a joy year-round, offering no shortage of romantic excursions and candlelit frolics.
Whether you’ve been planning a trip for some time, or you want to surprise your partner, here’s how to get starry-eyed in Strasbourg.

Take a bike ride
There’s no better way to start exploring the city streets than with a meandering bike ride. You’ll find Véhlop bike-sharing stations across the city (recognised by their lime green fairings), which allow you to hop-on and hop-off at designated points around Strasbourg.
We recommend starting in the historic centre and making your way to Petite-France, the city’s former tanning district. It’s the perfect spot for a couple’s selfie, framed by black and white timber houses and Gothic churches. Continue upstream on the River Ill to see the impressive Strasbourg Cathedral.

Get on the water
If you’re visiting in the warmer months, an open-top boat trip on the River Ill is an absolute must. Of course, it’s equally mesmerising – if a little chillier – during the winter season, where you’ll be dazzled by the bright lights of the Christmas market dancing on the still surface.
Most tour operators run from the quay at Palais Rohan, with options ranging from history tours to European Parliament cruises. For a more romantic affair, opt for a gourmet cruise, where you can sample traditional Alsatian fare while soaking up the sights by night.

Enjoy a romantic meal
It would be a sin not to take advantage of Strasbourg’s myriad charcuteries, fromageries and bakeries. Pack a bag and have a lunchtime picnic in the city’s oldest park, Parc de l’Orangerie, located in the European Quarter. If you’re closer to the Musée de l’Oeuvre Notre-Dam, Jardinet Gothique provides an equally charming setting.
For dinner, Maison Kammerzell is a long-held Strasbourgeois must-try. Famed for its fish sauerkraut, the restaurant is set in a landmark building dating back to the 15th century. But don’t worry, for less adventurous eaters the menu has plenty of depth. For alternative intimate options, consider Eric Meyer’s Le Violon d’Ingres or couple’s favourite, Le 1741.

Have a nightcap
From bustling beer halls to exquisite wine bars, options after dark are far from limited. If you and your significant other have a taste for craft European beers, opt for the taster menu at Académie de la Bière, it’s a great place to end (or, if you’re so inclined, start) your night.
For something more upmarket, consider L’épicerie, known for its elegant décor and exhaustive local wine list. Le Bar Champagne is perfect for those who want to celebrate an anniversary with a glass of bubbles, while La Java is known for its late-night party atmosphere.
