Fasnacht, or ‘Carnival’, is a huge deal in Solothurn. Said to have first taken place in the 15th century, it is rooted in the rich traditions and culture of the town, but takes an extremely 21st century view of them all. With processions, costumes and ornate carriages, Solothurn Carnival takes over the streets of this Baroque town, from the ‘Day of Hilarity’ all the way through to Carnival Sunday over a month later. The carnival is run by Honolulu, the Fools’ Guild, who organise the fascinating array of events, traditions and associated weirdness that characterise this fabulous and historic expression of joy.
