You can’t come to Germany in December and not expect to be greeted with an extravagant Christmas market. The one in Bielefeld has over 120 stalls, selling everything from local food and drinks to Christmas ornaments and festive handicrafts. Be sure to make it to the wooden house of Nicholas in the old town, where you’ll find a big open fire. Also, keep an eye out for the traditional “feuerzangenbowle”: an alcoholic drink made from a rum-soaked sugar loaf that is set on fire and dropped into mulled wine. It will definitely keep you warm! Bielefeld’s Christmas markets are open from the last week of November to the end of December.
