Gotha’s oldest German restaurant, Weinschänke, has been operating just on the edge of the historic town centre since 1902. The food is an excellent combination of traditional Thuringian cooking methods with more contemporary and alternative ingredients, with specialities like crocodile steaks, roast reindeer, sauerbraten and home-smoked cheeses. An excellent local wine list and German beer on tap completes a fine picture. Open Wednesday to Saturday 11.30am to 2.30pm and 6pm to 10.30pm, and Sunday 11.30am to 2.30pm.
