The Krämerbrücke or Merchants’ Bridge is the longest and oldest inhabited bridge in the world, line with shops, market stalls and houses for over 500 years. Once a year this amazing landmark is flung back in time with its own festival, a celebration of life in Erfurt in the Middle Ages. Watch Thuringian master craftsmen at work making jewellery, weapons and leather items. Be entertained by jesters juggling, minstrels singing and tumblers prancing, or gaze in wonder at the skill of sword fighters doing battle for a prize. The festival comes to a climax on Saturday night with a jaw-dropping display of pyrotechnics and music against the imposing background of the 800-year old cathedral. For kids and adults alike, the Merchant’s Bridge Festival is a whole lot of fun.
