Weimar’s Duchess Anna Amalia Library first opened its doors in the 19th century and is an influential research centre for European cultural and literary archives. The standout gems of the library include an important Shakespeare collection of around 10,000 volumes, and a 16th century bible reputedly used by Martin Luther. But the Library isn’t just a remarkable collection of German literature and historical documents, it’s also an incredibly beautiful place to visit, with classical statues scattering the balconies and stairwells. Open Tuesday to Sunday 9am to 5pm.
