German Christmas markets are famous worldwide, and Hamburg’s authentic festive celebrations are an excellent example of the genre. When December arrives and the Christmas lights go up, the city comes alive with an array of seasonal happenings and Christmas treats. Set against the splendid backdrop of the historic Rathaus, the main Christmas market is a go-to for beautiful artisanal creations from across the country, from hand-carved Tyrolean decorations to mouth-watering baked goods from Aachen. The historic market in front of town hall is organised by the famous circus Roncalli, who presents the main attraction; flying santa sleigh. The city holds over 30 different Christmas markets in total, as well as festive parades and a maritime-themed Father Christmas event.
