Once the world’s tallest building, the church of St Nikolai is an arresting sight. The Gothic Revival structure, built on the site of church dating back to 1195, was largely destroyed by Allied bombing raids in World War II. Now it stands as a dramatic and unflinchingly candid memorial to the horrors of war. A glass elevator takes you up to a viewing platform high up the remaining spire, while the crypt houses the main memorial exhibition. Open daily 10am to 5pm.
