Peter Paul Rubens is Antwerp’s most famous son, and for good reason. Rubens is celebrated as one of the greatest European painters of the 16th and 17th centuries and his Baroque work is influential even today. Every year, Antwerp honours the life and works of its favourite historic resident with a loving recreation of a 17th century Flemish market, complete with traders in historical costumes! This huge affair spans several squares around the Grote Markt, with an array of artisans, makers, bakers, florists and food stalls — the final result is an event which transports you back in time, to the Antwerp of days gone by.
