Suspension Espresso
Suspension started out as a roastery in a slightly dodgy neighbourhood, and have grown up to become one of the leading lights of Newcastle’s coffee scene, describing themselves as ‘an institute of coffee, creativity and community’. Their coffee, roasted on-site, is exemplary, their breakfasts generous and delicious, and they sell a remarkable assortment of complicated coffee-making equipment, as well as bags of their own beans. What more could you ask for? Open daily from 6am to 5pm.
Good Brother Espresso Shop
Good Brother have been the counterpart to Suspension in Newcastle’s city centre, leading the new wave of coffee love and serving up quality coffee (using Suspension’s beans) and delicious baked goods in the heart of the town. The rustic vibe of their shop and streetside tables makes for a welcoming and friendly vibe, and this is one of Newcastle’s most beloved cafes. Open Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 5pm, and weekends 6:30am to 3pm.
Ground Up Espresso
Ground Up Espresso is an eye-catching site in the leafy suburb of Carrington. An old butcher’s shop, transformed into a hip cafe with a beautifully clean, minimal interior, and a tiled frontage that is a riot of colour and excitement. A bit of a hidden gem, given its suburban location, but with such a vivid exterior and quality food and coffee, it has no problem pulling in the crowds. Open Monday to Friday from 6:30am to 3pm, Saturday 7am to 3pm, and Sunday 8am to 12:30pm.
Blue Door
Blue Door is the perfect place for a winning combination of excellent coffee and healthy, nutritious and delicious food. Serving up a selection of nourishing bowls, raw and vegan options and fresh, seasonal ingredients, Blue Door is a great place to unwind, guilt free. They also have a kiosk on the beach in Merewether, if you need a coffee with your sea air. Open daily from 6am to 1:30pm.
Dark Horse Espresso
Hidden away among the warehouses in Wickham, Dark Horse Espresso’s tiny, industrial chic cafe is a not-so-hidden secret among the coffee aficionados of Newcastle. Famed for the quality of their coffee, their attention to detail, and their out-of-this-world toasties, this hole-in-the-wall cafe is well worth seeking out. Open from 6:30am to 2pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 12pm on Saturday. Closed Sunday.
Rubber Duckies
Tristan, owner of Rubber Duckies, has been a mainstay of the Newcastle cafe scene for many years. His latest venture is a step away from the eclectic hipster aesthetic that dominates the coffee world, and aims to provide quick, casual, honest food, and simple coffee done well. That’s not to say that the cafe isn’t charming and elegant, which it is, or that the coffee isn’t as good as you’ll find anywhere else in the city, which it also is. But the vibe is more relaxed, more casual, and a lovely place to refresh and unwind. Open from 6am to 3pm Monday to Friday.
