Newcastle Memorial Walk
The Newcastle Memorial Walk is a relatively recent addition to Newcastle’s fine heritage attractions, but is one of its most moving. A scenic pathway, towering over the craggy cliffs of Strzelecki Headland, with a stunning view that alone is worth the walk. However it is the touching and emotional sculptures that line the path, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli, and the men and women who served, that is the main event here. A moving and magnificent memorial that is a must-see in Newcastle. Open 24 hours a day.
Blackbutt Nature Reserve
Blackbutt Reserve is 182 hectares of natural bushland just outside the city, that offers a haven of nature trails, outdoor activities and treetop walkways, as well as the chance to get up close and personal with some of Australia’s most famous wildlife. The exhibits include koalas, kangaroos, wombats and possums, as well as an array of fantastic bird life in the trees above. A great family day out. Picnic facilities are open from 7am to 7pm daily, and the wildlife exhibits from 10am to 5pm.
Fort Scratchley
Fort Scratchley is the only Australian fort to have ever engaged with a marine military attack, fending off a Japanese submarine during World War Two. Originally built by the British during the Crimean War in the 19th century to protect against a feared Russian invasion, the fort is now a fascinating museum, with an amazing labyrinth of tunnels beneath it that make a guided tour a must. Open all week except Tuesday, from 10am to 4pm.
Newcastle Art Gallery
5000 works of art make up Newcastle Art Gallery’s excellent collection, and they make fine use of them, ignoring the traditional form of a permanent display and instead rotating the collection on a regular basis. The Brutalist exterior masks a truly excellent regional gallery, with works by Newcastle-born William Dobell and John Olsen as well as Brett Whiteley and modernist Grace Cossington Smith. Open Tuesday to Sunday, from 10am to 5pm.
The Lock-Up
The Lock-Up is forward-thinking and progressive gallery, a multi-disciplinary contemporary arts space, a remarkable creative hub, and all situated in one of Newcastle’s most significant heritage buildings. Newcastle’s police station and lock-up from 1861 to 1982, it now stands as one of the most exciting artistic endeavours in the region, as well as retaining its rare, heritage-listed cells. Its program is equally eclectic, often referencing its grim history of incarceration and oppression with intriguing, thoughtful and dark performances and pieces. Open Wednesday to Saturday from 10am to 4pm and Sunday 11am to 3pm.
Skydive the Beach
The Central Coast and the beaches around Newcastle are some of the most beautiful in New South Wales, and what better way to see them than from 14,000 feet up! For adrenaline junkies, the short trip down to Lake Macquarie is a must. You’ll freefall at 200 km/hr for over a minute, before floating gently over the beautiful scenery of Newcastle for a further seven minutes, soaking up the best beach and city views imaginable.
