Mackay is a relatively small, very laid-back town, and it is hardly going to rival the big cities for late night raves and all night parties. However, with its picturesque position on the Pioneer river, and its burgeoning food and culture scenes, it is slowly gaining a reputation as a place to have fun after dark.

The Paddock and Brew Company
Paddock and Brew is an American-style smokehouse and craft beer bar, serving up a huge range of Australian and international ales, alongside enormous portions of fried chicken, pulled pork, brisket and buffalo wings. A light-hearted, boisterous and enthusiastic atmosphere makes this the perfect place to grab a bite and throw back a few beers after a long day of sightseeing. Open from 5pm to midnight Mondays and Wednesdays, and 7am to midnight Thursdays to Sundays. Closed Tuesdays.
Dirty Martinis
Dirty Martinis is THE place to go in Mackay for an upmarket, refined and elegant atmosphere, and killer cocktails to match. Later on, the place tends to get lively as the lights go down, DJs spin tunes, and the party gets started. Dirty Martinis makes a great choice for both a sophisticated early evening drink, or a more decadent night out. Open late Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The Gallery
The Gallery opened in 2017, on the site of the long-established Lucifers, Karma, and Platinum Bar, and is emblematic of the rebirth of Mackay’s nightlife. A retro-themed bar, aimed squarely at providing good times for a slightly older and more discerning crowd, with huge chandeliers, art on the walls, and several outdoor verandahs. The Gallery is the perfect blend for a relaxed yet entertaining night out, and with two bars, pool tables and a huge dance floor, it offers something for everyone. Open Monday and Tuesday from 5pm to 2am, Wednesday and Thursday 4:30pm to 3am, and Friday to Sunday 3pm to 3am.
Langford’s Hotel
Langford’s Hotel is a Mackay institution, and has been serving cold beers and a warm welcome since 1908! One of the few city centre buildings to survive the 1918 cyclone, it is truly an historic Mackay landmark. With a down-to-earth, authentic character, and even, reputedly, a resident ghost, Langford’s is a great place to head for a few no-nonsense cold ones, with live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Open daily until late.
Movidas
While many of Mackay’s traditional night clubs have closed down or faded away, Movidas has held firm through some tricky times and is still keeping the party spirit going on the Coral Sea. With the best dance floor in town, and hosting some of the most talented artists and DJs in the area, Movidas remains the gold standard of the serious party crowd in Mackay.
The Dispensary
The Dispensary would not look out of place in downtown Manhattan, or in the background of a Bond movie. Divided neatly into cafe, dining and bar areas, this is the perfect place for a chic, relaxed night out whether you want a buzzing place to eat, or to get a bit more lively with a few drinks. Their extensive wine and whisky menu is worth the trip alone. Open Tuesday to Saturday from 6am to midnight, and 6am to 2:30pm on Monday. Closed Sunday.
