Overlooked for many years in favour of the bright lights of Melbourne, Bendigo has been quietly carving out one of the most exciting and diverse dining scenes around. From fine dining in majestic buildings from the gold rush days to undiscovered little eateries down European-inspired laneways, there’s loads for the discerning foodie to get their teeth into.

Goldmines Hotel
Tasteful yet pretty damn grand, the space of this fabulous heritage hotel, one of the most impressive remnants of the Victoria Hills gold rush, is the perfect backdrop to some of the cooking in town. Locally sourced fine dining sits alongside classic pub fare, offering something for everyone. The beautiful dining room is a treat for the eyes, as is the equally gorgeous leafy beer garden. Open Wednesday from 5:30pm to 9pm, Thursday to Saturday from 12pm to 9pm, and Sunday 12pm to 8pm.
Woodhouse
A wonderful offering to the gods of meat, Woodhouse is a carnivore’s heaven. Cooking almost exclusively on a wood-fired grill and oven, they champion locally raised meat, and it shows - this is some of the finest, most succulent meat you’ll ever taste. Paired with local beer, wine and cider, and set in a tastefully decorated space with dark wood, and exposed brick, this is a pretty special dining experience. Open Tuesday to Friday from 12pm to 2:30pm and 5:30pm to midnight, and Saturday 12pm to midnight.
Mason’s of Bendigo
Mason’s of Bendigo is one of the more sophisticated eateries you’ll find in town, with an almost equally high focus on the aesthetics of the plate as on the quality of the food. Colour, texture and flavour combine in artistic, elegant and eclectic offerings of small and large plates, with an exclusive focus on small local and Australian producers. A restaurant experience to savour, and one that won’t disappoint even the most demanding of foodies. Open Tuesday to Sunday from 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to midnight.
Rocks On Rosalind
Rocks On Rosalind is a relative newcomer to Bendigo, and offers a touch of elegance and old-school class, with surroundings to match in the form of the historic National Bank building. The menu is an exciting fusion of Modern Australian with Asian and European influences, and dining downstairs between the old bank vaults is a pretty atmospheric experience. Be sure to check out the bullet hole in the front window from a long-forgotten bank heist! Open from 12pm to 9pm from Thursday to Sunday.
Flight Bar & Bottleshop
Flight is all about fried chicken, and they take it very seriously indeed. They make a no-frills yet somehow impossibly addictive chicken burger that will leave you begging for more, as well as seriously good cajun-style fries. For something a bit special, order their ‘Fat Chicken’ special 24 hours in advance, and prepare yourself for a taste sensation. The bar also has a magnificent selection of craft beer to wash down your fried deliciousness. Open daily from 12pm to 8pm.
Sangria Tapas Bar
Sangria Tapas Bar is a wonderfully relaxed spot for casual dining, dedicated to two of the greatest Spanish exports, sangria and tapas. Four floors of eating space plus a picturesque rooftop with great views of the city make this a perfect place to chill out and enjoy the excellent tasting menu with matched wine...or just a few nibbles and a jug of sangria! Open Tuesday to Thursday from 5:30pm to 9pm, and Friday and Saturday from 5:30pm to 11pm.
