Central Deborah Gold Mine

The Central Deborah Gold Mine is the perfect combination of entertainment and education, and is a fabulous day out for families of all ages. You’ll likely spend the whole day exploring the extensive network of underground tunnels (nine levels in total!) to find out how an authentic gold mine worked during the boom years of the gold rush. So don a hard hat and see what life as a miner was like for yourself! Open daily from 9:30am to 4:30pm, with guided tours to lower levels at specific times during the day.

Bendigo Art Gallery

Bendigo Art Gallery has been around since 1887, and justly deserves its reputation as one of the finest regional art galleries in Australia. Its permanent collection is impressive, and includes Australian art dating back to the mid-19th century. Its program of temporary exhibitions is well-thought out, interesting and outside-the-box (a recent exhibition was dedicated to Marilyn Monroe!). Open daily from 10am to 5pm.

Golden Dragon Museum

The Golden Dragon Museum is the Chinese Cultural Centre of Australia, and provides an in-depth and unique perspective on the huge influence of Chinese culture and immigrants on Bendigo. The museum is designed to preserve Chinese culture in Australia, as well as exploring the fascinating connection between Chinese miners and rural Bendigo. The gardens are also beautiful, modelled on Beijing's Imperial Palace. Open from 9:30am to 5pm from Tuesday to Sunday.

Bendigo Botanic Gardens

Bendigo’s Botanic Gardens are some of the oldest and longest-running of their kind in Victoria. As a matter of fact, they are nearly as old as the town itself, having been established in 1857 just six years after gold was first discovered here. The Gardens provide a lush, shady and welcome relief from the midday sun, and an afternoon spent exploring the wonderful plant collections is time well spent. Open daily from 7:30am to 9pm.

Bendigo Tramways

Trams have been a mainstay of Bendigo’s transport system since the late 19th century, and Bendigo Tramways have taken a unique approach to exploring and celebrating this heritage. Climb on board a fully restored vintage tram, and take a tour through the city, enjoying beautiful views and digesting Bendigo’s architectural and historic past. The trams are hop-on, hop-off, making this one of the best ways to see the city. Open daily from from 10am to 4pm.

Bendigo Wine Tours

The Bendigo Wine Region is famous for its bold, rich, deep Shiraz, and takes in wineries in Bendigo, Bridgwater and Harcourt. The best way to explore the terroir and the winemaking process (and taste some of the wines along the way, naturally) is with Bendigo Winery Tours, who provide a comprehensive program of tastings at wineries and cellar doors in the picturesque countryside surrounding the city. Private tours run all week.
