Albany’s has some sophisticated and bohemian bars, and a lively and exciting nightlife if you know where to look. The atmosphere on Stirling Terrace is always buzzing after dark, and the Albany Marina is a beautiful place for a few drinks as the sun goes down.

Due South
Due South, as its name suggests, has magnificent views south across the water, and its light and airy interior makes for a lovely place to pass the time over a few drinks. The bar offers a fantastic selection of craft beer, and the wine list containing only Great Southern region wines is a nice touch. They also have a good menu which embraces locally caught seafood and produce from the surrounding area. Open Sunday to Thursday from 11am to 10pm, and Friday to Saturday 11am to midnight.
Liberté
Liberte exudes an air of louche, bohemian elegance, and is a surprisingly elegant and hip addition to Albany’s after-dark drinking scene. Inside, the decor is all velvet-trimmed faded luxury and eclectic hipster casualness, while the cocktail and craft beer menu is exciting and varied. The cherry on top is the bar food, a delightful combo of French/Vietnamese cuisine which is worth a look alone. Open Monday to Saturday from 12pm to midnight.
The White Star Hotel
The White Star is a great example of a good old-fashioned Aussie pub, and does what it does brilliantly. The classic pub grub is exemplary, the beer selection is top notch, including locally brewed Wilson Brewing Company ales, and the atmosphere is laid-back and welcoming. Sunday nights are a particular highlight, when local folk and blues bands get everyone’s feet tapping, and keep the vibe lively. Open from 11am to midnight Monday to Saturday, and 4pm to midnight Sunday.
Rats Bar
Rats is a cosy, inviting little bar, beautifully decorated with recycled timber, and providing a delicious tapas menu and superb Great Southern region wines to go alongside. Housed in a picturesque renovated cottage, with a gorgeous veranda for the longer summer nights, Rats provides the perfect, intimate spot to settle in with friends, and enjoy the great food and wine on offer. Open Thursday to Monday from 10am to 9:30pm.
Garrison
If you are looking for something a little more upmarket for your evening’s entertainment, then look no further than the Garrison. Located next to the National Anzac Centre, the family-run restaurant and bar has one of the best views in town, overlooking the King George Sound and Princess Royal Harbour. The Modern Australian menu is excellent, the choice at the bar is extensive, and it’s also the best place in Albany for live music, and hosts the sharpest DJs on Friday and Saturday nights. Open weekdays from 10am until late, and weekends from 9am until late.
The Earl of Spencer
The Earl of Spencer is one of the oldest and most historic taverns in Western Australia, and has been serving drinks on their site since 1884. It’s an authentic, local, no-frills kind of place, with generous portions of traditional pub food, and 15 ales on tap, and provides a warm welcome and a cold beer for everyone. With live music on weekends, and even a resident ghost, this is a great place for a true Great Southern experience. Open Monday to Thursday from 11am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday 11am to midnight, and Sunday 12pm to 10pm.
